ComEd Update
ComEd representatives provided an update on the power situation in Plainfield at the Village's Coffee with the Mayor meeting. ComEd's External Affairs Manager and Director of External Affairs discussed ComEd's commitment to the Village of Plainfield now and in the future.
While some ComEd customers continue to have trouble with the temporary generator power provided, ComEd is working hard to put every customer back on the permanent grid. ComEd identified that customers will be called before their power is switched over from generator service to permanent grid service over the next few days. The Village encourages residents to call 1-800-Edison1 to address any power issues and contact the Police Department through 911 with any life safety issues.

2008 Cavalcade of Homes Goes Green
The 2008 Cavalcade of Homes goes “green” this year with the Village of Plainfield’s first certified green building and home! The Cavalcade of Homes is Illinois’ most elaborate custom home tour, presenting a show of homes built by custom builders representing state-of-the-art construction, interior design, and landscaping. In 2008, the show adds another desirable element to this tour with St. Thomas Homes’ certified green home.
St. Thomas Homes is constructing an energy efficient custom home that aspires to be certified green by the National Association of Home Builders at the gold level, receiving LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation, and being certified by the new Green Building Initiative called “Green Globes.” The custom home is equipped with ENERGY STAR appliances and windows, recycled materials, and an open cell, foam insulation system. The most momentous green element within the home is the Geothermal heating and cooling units connected to high efficiency, tankless gas water heaters. Geothermal systems are an energy efficient and cost effective approach for heating and cooling a home. These systems reduce carbon footprints and utility bills at the same time by using the free, renewable energy found on one’s own property. Up to 70% can be saved on heating, cooling, and hot water costs. There are very few of these systems throughout the Midwest region.
The benefits of certified green homes and buildings are substantial. Lower priced energy bills, cleaner air, less waste, natural sound barriers, and the conservation of water, gas, and trees are just a couple of examples.
The Village of Plainfield is proud to announce the construction of the Village’s first green certified building! Building green and promoting energy efficiency are consistent with the Village’s Green Village initiative and the nationally recognized Cool Cities campaign, which the Village became a member of in March of 2007.
Tour this home, as well as others, at the 2008 Cavalcade of Homes in the Stewart Ridge subdivision in Plainfield from June 28 through July 20, 2008. Participating builders include DJK Custom Homes, Inc., James Scott Custom Builders, Fry Properties, St. Thomas Homes, Christyn Homes, and Crimson Design & Construction.
For more information on the Village’s first certified green home, please call Sara Leach in the Village Planning Division at (815) 439-2824 or contact the Builder (St. Thomas Homes) directly at (630) 973-9061.
Green Village 2008 Series
Learn to Complement the “Green” Efforts Employed in Your Landscape With Efforts In and Around Your Home!
On Monday, May 12, 2008, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., at the Plainfield Public Library, Michael Lambert, with ARRIS Architects + Planners, P.C., will discuss ways to “go green” while preserving your home’s historic integrity. The greenest house is the house that is already built. However, even older houses can be more eco-friendly and can complement the “green” efforts employed in your landscape and household lifestyle.
The Village of Plainfield and the Plainfield Public Library District have partnered to create an educational series to raise environmental awareness to individual homeowners and business owners. Click here for a series schedule. For more information, please call Sara Leach in the Village Planning Division at (815) 439-2824 or Judi Desczc with the Plainfield Public Library at (815) 439-2877. Volunteers Sought for Plainfield’s DuPage River Sweep May 17
The Village of Plainfield invites residents, students, and members of service groups and other organizations to participate in the 2008 DuPage River Sweep on Saturday, May 17, 2008 in Plainfield. Volunteers will help remove debris and litter from the DuPage River and tributary areas to improve water quality, reduce flood risk, and enhance safety for people and animals who rely on the DuPage River for recreation and habitat. Volunteers are also invited to enjoy a post-event barbecue at the Plainfield Park District’s Mather Woods facility.
The DuPage River Sweep is a regional stream cleanup that is held to encourage citizens and volunteers to help “sweep our rivers clean” by picking up debris in and along the DuPage River. The event is organized regionally by The Conservation Foundation and locally by the Village of Plainfield, Community Development Department. The River Sweep is sponsored by Waste Management, Inc., 95.9 The River – Rock & Roll Favorites For the ‘Burbs, and the County of DuPage. The event has been held since 1991, during which time more than 7,300 volunteers have removed more than 180 tons of garbage from the DuPage River. Plainfield’s River Sweep will be held in May this year to allow students to participate, while the majority of other communities will hold their events in early June.
On the day of the event, participants will meet at Plainfield’s Village Hall at 8:30 a.m. before traveling to designated cleanup sites along the DuPage River. Volunteer groups and individuals are invited to join in the Sweep. To participate, contact Sara Leach, Village of Plainfield Planning Division, at (815) 609-6126 by May 5, 2008 or click here for a registration form.
Lockport Street Detour
Lockport Street in downtown Plainfield is closed to westbound traffic between James Street and Route 59. Alternate routes for westbound traffic include Route 126 and 143rd Street. Lockport Street is open to eastbound traffic and parking is available on the south side of Lockport Street and on the adjacent side streets. In addition, parking is available in five public parking lots located downtown. Pedestrian access will be maintained to businesses at all times.
The detour of westbound traffic is necessary for the construction of a new water main, reconstruction of Lockport Street, and the construction of streetscape enhancements on Lockport Street. The detour will be in place throughout construction which is scheduled for substantial completion by October 31, 2008.
Project information and permitted/prohibited turn movements associated with the detour are available on the project web site: www.plainfieldstreetscape.com. For additional information, please contact: Randall W. Jessen, Plainfield Public Works Department, at (815) 436-3577.
